Graduate Studies
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science offers a unique environment for graduate study: we are large enough to employ world-renowned professors and top-notch research facilities in our mission, yet are small enough to give each graduate student personal attention.
We offer a wide range of subjects for graduate instruction and research, including the kind of interdisciplinary collaboration that is a way of life on the UC Davis campus. In the past decade, approximately 173 students, mainly Ph.D. candidates, have earned their graduate degrees here.

Degrees and Requirements
The following graduate handbooks, updated annually, offer a guide to graduate study and a comprehensive source for degree requirements in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science.
Designated Emphases
Graduate students in certain Ph.D. programs may participate in a Designated Emphasis, a specialization that might include a new method of inquiry or an important field of application which is related to two or more existing Ph.D. programs.
Ph.D. students in chemical engineering or materials science may participate in the following Designated Emphasis (DE).
Office of Graduate Studies Graduate Student Guide
This handbook is a guide to getting started as a new graduate student, providing financial information and summarizing requirements for obtaining a graduate degree, as well as tips on resources available on campus, life in Davis and life balance issues.
Graduate Council Mentoring Guidelines
An integral part of the graduate study experience is the mentoring that faculty provide to their students. This guidelines outline what you can expect from these important relationships.
Financial Aid
Typically, all Ph.D. students in our department receive financial support for a normal course of study. Funding is available through fellowships, work study and Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) stipends. Each Ph.D. student also must serve as a teaching assistant for two quarters. To learn more:
Graduate Fellowship or Traineeship Opportunities
CREATE-IGERT
The multi-institutional National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program, entitled Collaborative Research and Education in Agricultural Technologies and Engineering (CREATE), provides a structured, well-integrated graduate research and educational training program that focuses on the use of transgenic plants and in-vitro plant systems for the production of industrial non-food products and biopharmaceuticals.
GAANN
The department has a GAANN (Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Need) program funded by the US Department of Education. Domestic Graduate Students in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering with a documented financial need are eligible. GAANN fellows will in addition to their research program take part in a novel structured teaching component to prepare them for their future careers. Please contact Professor Roland Faller for more information.
